How to Protect Your Relevance from Extinction

I'm Shortening My Journey. Are You?

You are not on a journey if there's no destination.

I started a new 30-year career plan this year. For the first 10 years, my focus is to be an author, speaker, coach, and trainer—expanding on my past and current successes in developing business people and shortening the time it takes for them find their perfect fit.

As part of that exploration, on Labor Day of this year I will embark on a 10,000-mile trip across America to interview as many people I can about how they stay engaged, relevant, and inspired while earning their keep. I’ll do some pop-up career coaching and some speaking gigs and workshops along the way. But, mostly I want to hear from real people in all walks of life, so I can learn and share their insights with you.

In the spirit of practicing what I preach, I will shorten my own journey to the perfect fit. You see, the second 10 years of my original plan had me shift my focus to storytelling through film and media. I figured I would learn a lot in a decade that would make me better and more likely to succeed.

But what I was really doing was putting off what I wanted to do for another 10 years! Why?

  • Fear

  • Circumstance

  • Insufficient courage

  • A desire to control

  • All of the above

So, the plan has changed. I’m still going on the Hidden Leader Road Trip. I will still interview, coach, and train along the way. I will build that business and help thousands of people. But while I’m at it, I’m adding “filmmaker” to my list of descriptors. I will document the whole trip and what people in America have to say about relevance, engagement, and inspiration in the workplace. I’m curious, and I think there is much we can learn from each other.

It is a lot to put together in the next two months, but I will be ready. I’m not in the way anymore.

Stay tuned next week for more on the route, how you can nominate interviewees, sponsorships, crowdfunding opportunities, and ways to “ride along.” And please subscribe, forward at will, and comment or email if you want to be kept up to date.

Note: Prior posting of this blog referrenced the impending voyage as the American Workplace Relevance Road Trip.
